Position Summary

Responsible for assisting the assigned ophthalmologist by managing clinic flow, organizing the doctor schedule, and oversee the daily activities of the clinic and clinical staff assigned to work with the doctor. The Ophthalmic Technician Lead assist in clinic as well as in surgery, as needed or requested by the surgeon.

Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Perform at a high level consistently, making fewer errors and better decisions over time
  • Expert understanding of clinical workflows, constraints, and system impact
  • Know when to escalate, intervene, or wait
  • Ability to redesign flow as needed without compromising safety or quality
  • Direct clinic flow and oversee clinical activities for their assigned doctor
  • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Direct and work with clinical staff on administrative tasks including patient communications, letters, prescription refills and other requests. Ensure all are completed within the specified timeframe per the practice protocol.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new clinical protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Ability to assist with advanced in-office procedures; ensures proper informed consent is obtained.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Able to determine if documentation supports E/M vs/ Eye Code, match applicable ICD-10 codes, and appropriately code in-office procedures based on documentation.
  • Able to educate patients regarding all conditions treated and surgical procedures performed by the doctor.

Administrative

  • Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering; request additional inventory items as needed
  • Participate & contribute to daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
  • Assist with patient requested paperwork completed (FMLA, DMV, SSDI, SS); assist with Referral and outside testing/study process
  • Complete electronic prescription refill related tasks including medication prior authorization process
  • Assist with triage for emergency and work-in patients
  • Understand and accept responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer
  • Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
  • Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
  • Develop strong connection with team members, influencing continued staff and team development.

Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
  • Current iJCAHPO COA certification required. COT or COMT certification preferred.
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
