Position Summary

We are actively recruiting for an open position of Preop/PACU LPN, at our affiliate, Eyecare Associates (Outpatient Eye Surgery Center).  The LPN hired will assist in the daily operations of the Preop/PACU in accordance with established federal, state, and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures.  Participates in direct patient care including maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment.

Responsibilities

Preop Duties Include:

Review chart to assure that all documentation is present from the Preop checklist.

Witness patients sign consents.

Verify the correct surgical site.

Monitor and record vital signs.

Record medical and surgical history.

Record patient allergies/reactions and current medications.

Administers eye drops, topical, post op meds and IM meds, oxygen per MD orders.

IV insertion.

Blood glucose.

Communicate to RN, surgeon or anesthesia personnel ABN, vitals, telemetry strips, and/or s/s or complaints from patients, and documents in the medical records.

Follow MD orders within the LPN scope of practice.

Take verbal orders.

Assist with ADLs

Assist surgeon with YAG capsulotomy laser and YAG PI laser.

Delegate non-complex tasks to unlicensed personnel.

 

PostOp Duties Include:

Receive patients in PACU that have stable vital signs, are awake or arousable with verbal or light tactile stimuli, and have no signs of anesthesia complications.

Assess LOC, report to RN if conditions are not met.

Give nutrition and document outcome.

Administer eye drops, topical, PO and IM meds, and oxygen per MD orders.

Give patient and family members discharge instructions.

Assist patients to vehicle via ambulation, walker or cane.

Assist RN with the care of patients that have had general anesthesia or deep sedation.

Assist RN with the care of patients experiencing postop complications.

 

Other Duties:

Communicate with OESC staff, physicians and anesthesia personnel.

Reviews/wastes/witnesses the narcotics daily log along with another nurse.

Checks expiration dates on all items used in PACU, removes those that are out of date, and returns them to the Administrator or medication nurse for appropriate returns/disposals.

Is responsible for patient safety in all areas of the facility, including monitoring side rails, and brakes on beds, assuring medication is given properly, monitoring flooring for liquid spills, reports any equipment failures or other issues to appropriate staff.

Restocks work area.

Checks the defibrillator, suction, and refrigerator, and documents proper function and temperature.

Other dutes as assigned.

Qualifications

LPN with current license to practice in the state of Louisiana.  Two years experience with an emphasis in PACU, surgery or ER required.  Knowledge of regulatory standards.

Employees must bel able to provide proof of their identity and right to work in the United States.

Interpersonal - Actively particicpates in the development of a health work environment.  Uses interpersonal skills to maintain healthy relationships, which include functional trust, positive feedback and constructive criticism. Good communication skills: oral and written.

Critical Thinking - Ability to make sound nursing judgement based on nursing theory.  Assumes responsibility for competency of practice and takes initiative for professional development and continuing eduction.

Knowledge - Working knowledge and experience in preop/PACU from a hospital or ambulatory surgery center including direct patient care.

Work Schedules - Ability to adhere to work schedule and manage time appropriately.  Ability to utilize resources in a timely, organized and cost-effective manner.
