Position Summary

The Lead Ophthalmic Photographer is responsible for the oversight, training, and coordination of ophthalmic imaging performed in clinical research trials. This position combines the clinical foundations of an Ophthalmic Technician with advanced ophthalmic photography skills. The Lead Photographer ensures research imaging is performed accurately, in compliance with protocol and regulatory standards, and that photography staff are properly trained, scheduled, and supported. This role serves as the primary imaging resource for the Research Department, reporting directly to the Clinical Manager.

Responsibilities

This position requires customer service skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a degree of independent decision-making.

 

  • Supervise daily activities of photography staff, ensuring efficient workflow and timely completion of imaging requirements.
  • Train, mentor, and assess competencies of ophthalmic photographers on imaging techniques, equipment use, and research protocols.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Manager on staffing, scheduling, and performance reviews for photography staff.
  • Ensure staff compliance with practice policies, research protocols, and regulatory requirements (e.g., GCP, HIPAA, OSHA).
  • Identify and image ocular anatomy for diagnostic and documentary photography
  • Perform single and stereo fundus photography
  • Photograph posterior pole through and around dense or opaque media
  • Slit lamp and gonio photography
  • Perform Angiography and obtain images (both FA and ICG)
  • Red free posterior pole and stereo imaging
  • Fundus Autofluorescence and diffuse external photography
  • Complete CITI certification and work within the framework of an IRB for clinical trials and studies
  • Certify for assigned clinical trial photography studies
  • Complete images and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in healthcare or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in ophthalmic imaging, with prior research or clinical trial experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, disease processes, and imaging technology.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple staff and projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to interact effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and study sponsors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; EMR and imaging software experience preferred.
