South Georgia North Florida Eye Partners offers a variety of eye care services from detection and medical treatment of eye diseases and injuries to advanced procedures including Lasik and cataract surgeries. We also have an on-site Optical Shop that carries the latest in designer frames and sunglasses. We offer several locations including Valdosta, Tifton and Douglas.

 

Position Summary

The Optician must be able to work with our diverse base of customers (i.e. pediatric, adolescent, and adult) by delivering quality optical care and outstanding and friendly customer service establishing customer loyalty. The Optician must be able to assist patients with eyeglasses ordering and fittings. The Optician must also possess strong sales skills by demonstrating a high level of knowledge about our products and determining our patient's need for eyewear to recommend specific accessories and or enhancement for glasses.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
  • Communicate with physicians regarding questions or concerns about prescriptions and other vision-related issues.
  • Inspect lenses to verify prescription accuracy, progressive measurements, coatings, enhancements, and identify defects.
  • Determine existing lens prescriptions using a lensometer or other optical measuring devices when necessary.
  • Measure pupillary distance, segment height, optical centers, bridge size, eye size, temple length, vertex distance, and other required optical measurements.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames based on prescription, fit, facial features, comfort, lifestyle, and personal style.
  • Recommend appropriate lenses, lens materials, coatings, enhancements, frames, and contact lenses based on patient needs and prescriptions.
  • Explain pricing, warranties, insurance benefits, and available eyewear options.
  • Dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses in accordance with physician or Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO) supervision, as applicable.
  • Create work orders and submit eyewear orders to in-house or external laboratory partners.
  • Verify completed eyewear meets prescription specifications prior to dispensing.
  • Mount, edge, bevel, grind, polish, shape, and finish lenses using appropriate laboratory equipment.
  • Set up and operate optical laboratory equipment safely and effectively.
  • Heat, bend, shape, and adjust metal or plastic frames to ensure proper fit, comfort, and optical alignment.
  • Repair damaged or broken eyeglass frames when appropriate.
  • Instruct patients on the proper wear, insertion, removal, cleaning, and care of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Verify contact lens fittings using appropriate instrumentation, including lensometer, slit lamp, keratometer, and/or radius scope, as required.
  • Place contact lens orders and maintain contact lens trial inventory.
  • Troubleshoot prescription or eyewear issues and serve as a liaison between patients, physicians, laboratories, and vendors.
  • Track patient orders, communicate delays or remakes, and provide timely follow-up to ensure excellent customer service.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, order documentation, and inventory records.
  • Assist with inventory management of frames, lenses, contact lenses, parts, chemicals, coatings, and retail supplies.
  • Arrange and maintain optical merchandise displays.
  • Participate in daily huddles, departmental meetings, and required training sessions.
  • Follow all safety protocols related to laboratory equipment, chemicals, and workplace procedures, reporting concerns to leadership.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, applicable regulatory requirements, and optical industry standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and a positive attitude.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Minimum 2 years eyecare experience required
    • Minimum Associates or equivalent and on-the-job training or post-secondary education
    • Ability to demonstrate eye–hand coordination, manual/finger dexterity, agility, and color vision and depth perception with visual acuity correctable to 20/25 while fitting eyeglasses and contacts
    • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office & EHR's; especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Team player that develops strong collaborative working relationships with internal partners and can effectively engage and to build consensus among cross-functional teams
    • Strong computer knowledge and skills with a minimum typing speed of 30 AW PM

    Preferred Skills:

    • Prior retail sales or work in the healthcare industry (preferred)
    • ABO and/or NCLE Certification
    • Degree from an accredited Opticianry Program / Completion of Opticianry Apprenticeship (preferred)
    • Strong reliability with good attendance and punctuality.
